The Boathouse

WYRA'S boathouse was formally dedicated in June, 2002, and is named the "Faith and Gordon Pizor Boathouse". The first floor houses state-of-the-art rowing tanks, an entrance and meeting room with commemorative brick flooring, two handicapped accessible bathrooms, an elevator, 2 WYRA boat bays, 2 boat bays rented to the University of Delaware women's and men's crews, and a "sick bay" where crews can work on damaged equipment.

The second floor presently consists of a large multi-purpose room with sliding glass doors which will one day open on to balconies overlooking the Christina River; a large deck (over the rowing tanks) presently in need of a railing and decking (the roof over the tanks was reinforced and has roof drains); an erg room; boys and girls dressing rooms which we hope to convert into locker rooms with showers; offices for staff and computers for rowers; and loads of storage space.

Boathouse Usage

The boathouse is used year round by rowers. WYRA holds one fall and two spring regattas here and both WYRA and University crews row out of the boathouse. In the summer Row-For-It™ camps, Rowing 101, and WYPERS use the facilities.

Winter sees youth crews from Pennsylvania and New Jersey rent the rowing tanks, weight room and ergometers. Novice and veteran Wimington Rowing Center crews also rent the tanks during the cold winter months.

Numerous organizations and individuals have also rented the boathouse. We have had many birthday, graduation, and Christmas parties, an after prom party, corporate meetings during the day and evening, a wedding rehearsal dinner, and the spectacular wedding of nationally known rowers.
