Who is WYRA?
The Wilmington Youth Rowing Association is a not for profit organization that offers a variety of recreational and competitive rowing programs to youngsters from Delaware, New Jersey and southeastern Pennsylvania.
WYRA uses the sport of rowing to teach responsibility, self-discipline, sportsmanship, and teamwork as a means of helping youth raise their self-esteem and to prepare them to withstand the pressures facing youth today.
How old is WYRA
WYRA was founded in 1989 and has been growing stronger ever since. With age comes experience and WYRA’s seen it all.
Why orange?
This has been a bone of contention with the kids from the very first day. The reason we chose orange as part of WYRA’s colors is very simple: visibility. When you’re watching 6 eights come down a race coarse from 1500 meters away and they all are either blue and white or green and white, it’s very difficult to tell which crew is yours. We decided to choose orange because almost no other high school program used it and you could spot the WYRA crews from 1500 meters away. It has since become part of our identity. And what we say to all of the kids who ask if we can change is, “would you ask Princeton to change their colors? Would you ask Syracuse to change theirs?” And of course the answer is always, “no.” It’s who we are.
